From 1200 feet above the Umbrian firmament, a breathtaking panorama spans the horizon from Fra Angelico's rooftop terrace which doubles as a visual trip planner. Look there! That hilltop is Spello. On another is Spoleto. Look again and there's Montefalco and Assisi too! On a clear day even Perugia reveals itself. These medieval pearls are easy drives from this central location. There are certainly plenty of fascinating destinations, just in plain view, to keep guests busy for weeks.

If you're drawn to Umbria for the earthiness of its food, the richness of its culture or the depth of its history, then both the little town of Trevi and Fra Angelico have a few surprises in store of their own. Only one requirement is preordained: agility. From the nearest parking, an 80 yard walk up a little lane along with 57 steps are required to reach the entrance. Even the limber come home in better shape, despite devouring every Umbrian delicacy in sight.

Fra Angelico and the owner's separate apartment occupy the top floor of this 14th century townhouse. The owner, a well known Hollywood writer and producer, and his wife reside mainly in the US. They spared no effort in making Fra Angelico a comfortable and memorable experience. This included securing the services of a neighboring English speaking couple.

Fra Angelico is very tastefully furnished, and the living/dining room enjoys a high beamed ceiling and a cozy fireplace. One of the bedrooms is smaller and best suited for one person or two children. All the windows are screened. The hidden gem is the outdoor rooftop terrace reached by a staircase in the living room. A superb spot for evening cocktails as the sun sets and then for al fresco dining using the electric grill.

Trevi's medieval center is reached by walking uphill through the town for 250 yards or by driving two minutes and parking in the main piazza. The center of town offers three restaurants, a cafe bar, a pharmacy, a mini-market selling the newly harvested Trevi oil that the town is known for, two Renaissance churches and an Olive Oil museum. A colorful outdoor market arrives in the piazza every Friday morning.

By car, the vineyards of Montefalco producing high quality red wines are 15 minutes away; Spello or Spoleto: 20; Assisi: 25; Todi: 35; Perugia or Deruta: 40; Orvieto: 60; Cortona: 75; Rome, Florence or Siena are all within two hour drives.
