Luxury Umbrian Castle for Rent
Over seven centuries ago when Castello Todini was born, 364 similar castles and fortresses protected the city state of Todi, an ancient Umbrian border town predating mighty Rome. As the locals are fond of saying: Todi boasted a castle for every day of the year. Today, very few of these strongholds remain. A stay in your very own luxuriously restored castle is an experience to be treasured for a lifetime. Befitting its defensive nature, Castello Todini was erected on a verdant hilltop guarding a spectacular panorama of tranquil fields and forested hills seen for miles around. The castle's rooftop that was yesteryear's guard post is now a dining and lounging terrace complete with a barbecue and festooned with linen parasols gently rustling in the breeze. This architectural gem has been newly refashioned for lovers of comfort and beauty. The stately entrance is marked by a medieval era inspired garden with an antique rose collection and restful sitting areas. The garden is tended to regularly and meticulously. A pathway leads to the pool that is set on a level below and is perfectly positioned for cocktails at sunset. Once inside the fortress, an elevator whisks guests through the air conditioned levels with each floor having large windows showcasing the mesmerizing view. The exceptional restoration and interior design are attributed to the owner who lives in Milan and works in the industry. Her tasteful blending of family antiques and designer furnishings is a testament to her profession. When in residence, the owner stays in her carriage house next door and may occasionally share the pool with guests. Spacious accommodations are spread over three floors while the two lower levels remain closed. The main kitchen and living room each seating 12 are on the topmost floor with another kitchen and living area on the level below. The bathrooms are uncommonly large rooms and are worthy of a showroom. Castello Todini is strictly a non-smoking home. For safety reasons, children under the age of 8 are not allowed. Conveniently included in the price are all utilities, firewood, three hours of daily cleaning, WiFi access and the use of two mountain bikes. Breakfasts, catered meals and cooking classes by a professional chef may be available on request with both requiring several months advance notice. For lovers of history, seemingly all of Italy's past is gathered around here. The area's finds include 3000 year old remnants of the mysterious Umbri, equally mysterious Etruscan artifacts, Roman temples, Gothic churches and a treasure trove of art inherited from the Renaissance. Lovers of food and wine will discover Todi's culinary excellence incorporating hearty Tuscan dishes from the north with signature Umbrian truffles. Within a mile, a pleasant walk leads to the medieval village of San Terenziano with a small and charming historical center with a few dining options and a minimarket. The entrance to the 3Bis roadway connecting Todi to all of Umbria's major sights is a 10 minute drive away. The walled city of Todi with its fascinating art, architecture and relaxed style of living is a 13 minute drive from Castello Todini; Deruta's ceramics: 25; Montefalco's wines: 30; Perugia's medieval center or Orvieto's Duomo: 45; Assisi and the basilica: 50; the beaches of Lake Trasimeno or the festival city of Spoleto: 60; the Tuscan wine capital of Montepulciano or Latium's olive oil hub of Rieti: 90; Rome or Siena: two hours and Florence is two and a half hours away.
