Unlike us, Italy has been fought over for centuries by anyone who’s ever wielded a sword. Simultaneously, Italians added to every sphere of human endeavor, enough to fill encyclopedias. On either count one could expect a sullen and dour people. On the contrary, Italians have learned to adapt and smile in the face of adversity. From their achievements, it is clear that work is considered sacred and intensely serious. However, and this is the miracle of Italy, to a soul, no Italian ever takes himself too seriously. There is too much to experience, to learn and enjoy, and so precious little time.
