Imagine… living in one of San Gimignano's signature medieval towers with stunning views from your rooftop terrace. At ground level, Zafferano's front door opens on to Piazza Cisterna - one of Tuscany's most picturesque squares. Across the square, two of Italy's best ice cream shops (gelaterie) duel for prominence. Next door, find an outdoor café and a restaurant with panoramic windows overlooking the surrounding vineyards. In the heart of San Gimignano, Zafferano is surrounded by cafes, trattorie, bakeries, wine shops and artisan boutiques. On Thursday morning, a fanciful outdoor market takes place in the piazza, steps from your door - treasures and bargains abound!
From the furnished rooftop terrace, a magnificent view of lush rolling countryside reaches to the Chianti hills. This is one of those rare exceptions where you can have your cake and eat it too! Walk to morning cappuccino, follow the aroma of freshly baked bread to the baker's oven or saunter down an ancient lane toward a wide array of restaurants. Then, just as easily, a stroll leads home where you'll enjoy picture perfect views over dreamily tranquil Tuscan landscapes.
While San Gimignano offers over a dozen restaurants within a few minutes' walk, be sure to continue another 200 yards along your street to Le Vecchie Mura, the only establishment in town with an outdoor garden patio for al fresco dining with exceptional views. For a romantic evening spent dining indoors, find Ristorante Peruca. It's hidden on a tiny pedestrian lane at the other end of town, 300 yards away. The entire walled hill town is barely a mile long and half as wide - don't be fooled by its compact size. San Gimignano is chock full of delightful discoveries!
Should you manage to ever leave town, San Gimignano has the advantage of being equidistant from Florence, Siena and the Chianti vineyards - all are within an easy 45 minute drive or less.
Zafferano is extravagantly spacious for three couples with a bedroom and bathroom on each level complemented by two living rooms, a dining room and an ample kitchen. Air conditioning is present in all bedrooms, the main living room and the study with a generous amount of usage included in the price. A professional restoration artfully crafted the immense open spaces of this medieval tower to combine modern functionality with equally incredible vistas outside. The original bricks and stones from 800 years ago now stylishly frame contemporary, comfortable furnishings.
To enjoy this exquisite retreat, guests must tackle the 75 steps that rise from the street level entry to the rooftop terrace. A luggage porter is courteously included for one trip on the arrival day and one trip on departure day. The porter delivers the luggage to the appropriate bedroom provided that guests select their bedroom prior to arriving.
San Gimignano's historic center is a restricted traffic zone. Parking is outside the town's medieval walls. Zafferano comes with the added perk of one enclosed parking space for a mid size car in a private garage beneath Parking 2, one of the town's lots. Guests meet an English-speaking manager who assists with dropping off luggage and then leads the way to the garage, 500 yards away.
Children under the age of 12 are not allowed. Cleaning service and a cooking class may be arranged when booking.
Summer guests can easily purchase a day pass to a community swimming pool outside the town walls that is within a 10 minute drive. For an utterly relaxing day, passes may also be purchased at the highly rated, Castelfalfi Golf resort offering swimming pools in a picturesque Tuscan setting with a café serving cocktails and a light lunch menu. This upscale resort is 35 minutes away by car and features a full service spa and a 27-hole golf course.
San Gimignano has a bus depot with service to the neighboring towns of Poggibonsi or Certaldo, both are 15 minutes away with train stations offering frequent service into Florence. By car, Siena is 35 minutes away; Florence: 45; Volterra, known for all things alabaster: 40; the wineries of Radda in Chianti or Greve in Chianti: 45; Pisa or Montecatini Terme: 60; Lucca, Arezzo or Cécina's sandy Tuscan beaches: 80; Cortona or Montepulciano: 90; Assisi: 2 hours; Cinque Terre: 2.5 hours.
