All About the Owner

Casale il Sauco
Casale il Saùco

My name is James, and I come from a richly diverse background, with English, Italian, and Austrian heritage. I’m an entrepreneur with a passion for hospitality and fine craftsmanship, working in both the villa rental and jewelry industries.

What inspired you to become a villa owner?
The inspiration came from my parents, who fell in love with this historic country house, originally built in 1756. It was in a state of disrepair when they purchased it, but with great care and dedication, they restored it to its former glory. Their vision was not only to preserve a piece of local heritage but also to share the beauty and traditions of the Mediterranean lifestyle with travelers from around the world.

How long have you owned this villa?
Our family has lovingly cared for this villa for the past 25 years. It has truly been a labor of love—growing from a dream into a flourishing reality.

Is there a personal story behind acquiring or restoring the villa?
Indeed, there is. While my parents initially balanced their professional lives with hosting short-term guests, their true dream was to create something lasting. After finishing my education and gaining experience in various businesses, I felt a strong pull to return to our roots. I chose to invest in the family vision and continue sharing the enchanting beauty of Cilento with others.

What is the name of your villa? Does it have a special meaning?
Our villa is called Casale il Saùco, named after the nearby Saùco Bay, nestled just below the Tresino Mountains. In Roman times, this bay was a thriving port, rich in history—a story we invite guests to explore further on their visit.

Built in 1756, the villa was once owned by the noble Perrotti family. It served as a working farmhouse for the surrounding agricultural lands and livestock—a true reflection of the region’s pastoral past.

Can you describe the key features of your villa?
The villa has been thoughtfully restored and divided into seven elegant apartments, each offering a harmonious blend of comfort and tradition. You’ll find hand-carved chestnut wood, hand-painted Vietri tiles, and stonework that echoes the rustic spirit of the region. The interiors are adorned with vintage books, a classic record player, a handmade Chesterfield sofa, and carefully curated collections that reflect Cilento’s soul. Here, “lento,” meaning “slow,” isn’t just a word—it’s a way of life.

What style or design influences can guests expect?
Guests will experience the warmth of traditional Cilento architecture, gently complemented by Tuscan touches and modern amenities. It’s a place where rustic charm meets understated elegance.
